Is Prescribed Metformin Tablets Right Treatment For Extensive Hair Loss?

hello, i am a 28 year old female that i am suffering from extensive hair loss and i noticed my hair become very thin and double falling out so i went to a dermatologist and she prescribed Metformin 500 mg, 2 tablets a day and also spironolactone 100 mg and cystine B6, but since i started taking metformin along with spirocolactone which i d been taking for 2 weeks before, i noticed i am loosing even more hair then i researched online about metformine and i learned this is especially prescribed for diabetics and PCOS so my question is that does Metformin help with hair loss or make it worse? Besides I am not diagnosed with any hormone disorders or PCOS, i just sometimes miss my menses for less than 10 days.

Hello,

Probable reason for your hair loss is androgenic hair loss. This occurs because of hormonal imbalance and there is more of testosterone or male hormones .This causes hair loss, excessive hair on chin, lips etc.

PCOS is one of the important cause for hormonal imbalance and this is the most probable reason for starring treatment by your dermatologist. I advise you to continue this treatment under your doctor guidance.

Not all cases of PCOS are associated with irregular menstrual periods. You may add minoxidil 2 lotion for topical application.

I will also advise to modify your life style like regular exercise, yoga and avoidance of junk foods. It will be also advisable to check for thyroid profile.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
