Is Prolactin Level Being 481 While Having Amennorhea High?

Hello I have received a letter from my consultant which was a copy of the letter he sent to my gp. It had on there the results of bloods taken for which my prolactin level was 481, is this high? I'm seeing him as I have secondary amennorhea and he is trying to resolve this. I also had an MRI of the brain and a 4mm mass has been seen on the pituitary gland

I read your query and I understand your concern.

Reference ranges can vary between different laboratories, however that value is very high and should be over the reference range of any laboratory.
It also correlates with your amenorrhea which is commonly caused by high prolactin levels.
The fact that a mass is seen in your pituitary gland indicates a benign tumor producing prolactin in your pituitary gland. It's common and one of the most frequent causes of amenorrhea. As I said benign and rarely threatening.
Treatment usually is attempted with drugs, the main ones belonging to a class called dopamine agonists which inhibit prolactin secretion. They are effective in most patients. If they are not effective enough or are associated with intolerable side effects surgery to remove the tumor is the next step.
I hope to have been of help.
