Is Proteus Mirabilis Contagious? Should He Take Probiotic Along With Antibiotics?
My 91 year old father who is in nursing home and has prostrate and bone cancer has proteus mirabilis infection that has developed protective cells so hard to get rid of. The nurses say he s not contagious but could be infectious so I m confused. When we visit him could we catch the infection. Should he also be taking a probiotic in additon to his antibiotic?
Hello Proteus mirabilis causes 90 % of proteus infections. These infections occurs in the COMMUNITY, in long-term care facilities, and in hospitals.
PROTEUS MIRABILIS colonizes healthy humans(prevalence 50 %). Yes your father's infection may spread and usually this remains contagious . As far as concerned about treatment , he should take antibiotics ( tetracycline ) along probiotic ( only for precaution ). In hospital ( during visit to your father ) you must take care about contact infection . Although most of infection arise from the urinary tract infection. Bacteria also causes pneumonia, in long term or hospitalized patient, soft tissue infections ( specially in DECUBITUS ( your father is in this group) & diabetic ulcers . Every precaution must be taken. Good luck.
