Is Proton Therapy Effective In The Treatment Of Prostate Cancer?
I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Gleason score 6 and ranked as low risk but 7 of 12 of the biopsy sites were cancerous. I plan to go ahead with treatment. I am looking at surgical removal or Proton Radiation therapy since their is a Proton therapy treatment center within a miles drive of my home. My urologist was pretty nocommittal about which would be best as he indicated it is a personal choice. I would prefer to do the Proton therapy because of the limited side effects but am concerned that the treatment would not get it all and then my only option after that is chemo therapy. Do you have any knowledge of Proton Therapy offered at the U of Florida in Jacksonville and in Orlando? If so how often does this type of treatment fail? Worried in DeLand Florida YYYY@YYYY I am 70 years old in great health with no comorbidities.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Proton therapy is not scientifically approved and it’s effic is not so sure. Success rate is poor with proton therapy and it is considered as an alternative medicine with only placebo effect. It is better to go with standard protocol according to your urologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
