Is Purging To Lose Weight Normal After Medications For Post Concussion Syndrome?
my daughter was in a car accident that resulted in post concussion syndrome that was treated with Lexapro then Celexa. Also migraines developed and was treated with Inderal. Over 9 months on these medications she gained 20 pounds. She is now 14 and I just found out she started purging to lose the weight she gained. Is this common?
I understand that you are concerned about your daughter's recent behavior of purging in order to lose weight. This is not normal. In fact, it could be an early indicator of an eating disorder.
Though certain measures to lose weight are acceptable like diet control and exercise, purging in order to lose weight is almost always indicative of a serious problem. Moreover, frequent purging can result in medical problems like dehydration, salt imbalance, etc.
I would suggest that you observe your daughter for any other signs of an eating disorder like a morbid fear of being fat, induced vomiting, counting calories obsessively, binging, etc. If there are any such signs, then you need to take her to a psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation and treatment.
