Is Purple Discoloration On The Toe A Symptom Of Cellulitis?

My toe turned purple. Not under the nail, but the most distal knuckle. I don t remember any trauma. It hurt at first, but got better after 24 hours. I took aspirin for a fever for the first time in years. Could that be significant? Could it be cellulitis? It has not spread (it s been 72 hours). I am 54 and in excellent health, although I take synthroid.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This sounds more likely to be a bruise rather than cellulitis, as cellulitis would normally be red, and cause swelling and warmth. Also, cellulitis in one area like this would be unusual.

The aspirin may have made it easier for you to bruise, and it may be that you bumped the toe without knowing it, leaving this little bruise.

As long as the pain and color continue to improve, it should resolve within a week, and I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
