Is Radiotherapy Necessary Post Total Parotidectomy?

I have ungergone total parodectomy in parotid gland,and it is low grade acinic cell carcinoma, but our doctors said that radiotherapy is not needed,because they have removed the tumor rremoval with sacrificing facial nerves,complete total removal and my doubt is whether i need to require radiotherapy or not? and my reports says that my tumor extends upto pheripheral margin,what does it mean sir,?

Hi,

Radiotherapy is usually given when we are not able to remove the tumor fully, either because it extends beyond the gland to surrounding tissue, or the surrounding lymph nodes are affected. Here the tumor is of low grade (less aggressive) and it has been fully removed (all margins of the removed gland might be clear in biopsy report). Report says that the tumor reached only up to periphery of the gland (not beyond its capsule / covering). You need not worry, just be confident.
