Is Ragi Cereal Advisable For A Diabetic And Kidney Patient?

hello, My mother aged 70 years is diabetic for the last 2 decades. She is also suffering from kidney problem. Her creatine reading is in the range of 2.2- 2.8 for the last 11 years. She is on insulin for the last 6 months in addition to anti diabetic tablets. She is taking 8 units in the morning, 12 in the noon and 8 units in the night. She is also suffering from Hyper Thyroidism and she is on Thyronorm. Please let me know if she can use Ragi as most of the dietitians strongly suggest not to use Ragi.

Urologist 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can understand your anxiety.
Your mother has diabetic nephropathy with CKD(chronic kidney disease).
She also has hyper-thyroidism and receiving treatment for it.
Ragi(finger millet), is very beneficial for diabetic patients.
It also is a goitrogenic agent. Thus it should not be consumed regularly.
Thus the dieticians advise must be sought,to decide quantity of ragi in diet.
If you've any doubts, send a direct question to me,in my name.
Dr.Matthew J. Mangat.
