Is Recurring Loss Of Voice While Having Sinusitis A Cause For Concern?

I often have a scratchy voice. I suffer from allergies and sinusitis... however, my voice fluctuates often year round, and in the last 2 years... every time I sneeze, I lose my voice for the day or for several days. Should I be concerned about that? Could there be a problem with my vocal cords? Or can that be caused from increased amounts of drainage?

Hello,

Voice change is seen in the following conditions:
1) Severe cold
2) Severe upper respiratory tract infection leading to intense cough
3) Vocal cord problems
4) Nasal congestion as in sinusitis

But voice change that frequent is not so common. I advise you to visit an ENT specialist once for examination of your upper airways and vocal cords just to rule out problems if any. Few tips to regain voice are as follows:
1) Warm salt water gargles would help restore your voice to some extent
2) Drinking warm water
3) Steam inhalation would clear the sinuses and decrease congestion thus improving the voice.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

General & Family Physician Dr. Priyanka's  Response
Hi,

Recurring loss of voice while having sinusitis can be a cause for concern and it would be a good idea to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist to have your vocal cords examined. Sinusitis can cause postnasal drip which can irritate the vocal cords and cause hoarseness or loss of voice.

However, if you are experiencing recurrent and prolonged voice changes, especially after sneezing, there may be an underlying issue with your vocal cords that should be evaluated. The ENT specialist can perform a laryngoscopy to look at your vocal cords and determine if any treatment is needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
