Is Reduction In Size Of Uterine Fibroid Advisable For Safe Surgery?

I am 44 years of age, have had 2 previous uterine fibroid surgeries and now need a 3rd surgery to remove fibroids that are the size of a full term pregnancy. My question is that I have read on this web site that women can recieve a medicine to reduce the size of the fibroid to allow for a safer surgery. I have recently had difficulty keeping my blood pressure under control with various prescribed medicines. In addition, I have started to experience seizures always a few days before my period, however, the neurologist treating the seizures does not feel that there is a connection between uterine fibroids and the seizures. I would like to know what a gynecologist, neurologist and diagnostician who works with menopausal related neuroses can tell me. I have never been pregnant nor married. I am considered obese due to the size of my abdomen. I use a C-pap for sleeping and cannot get my blood pressure under control. I have blackout periods where I do not remember hours and days prior to and after a seizure .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear ,
This is Dr. S. Tomar from healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I ll be your medical adviser for this question.
If you are not having heavy bleeding and are not anemic then Medicines like GnRH Agonists can be tried for reducing the size of fibroid before surgery .These medicines can increase the heavy bleeding in the beginning of course and there might be need of blood transfusion . If the fibroid is too big and causing severe symptoms like pressure symptoms then direct surgery also can be done . The decision whether to go for first decreasing the size and later remove the fibroid depends on individual symptoms , presence of heavy bleeding , anemia , pain and previous treatments . I also don't think that there is any relation between your seizures and fibroid but a complete metabolic profile should be done to rule out any possible metabolic cause of seizures .

This is my initial response and discussion is open until you have any query or need further clarification.
I wish you good health .
sincerely,
Dr. Shardendu Tomar
