Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took 40mg of Omeprazole for acid reflux for two days, then had severe ringing in the ears. I stopped the Omeprazole for one day and then started taking it again. Is it possible for there to be a rebound effect for stopping omeprazole for one day.
Omeprazole belongs to the group of medications known as proton pump inhibitor medications which is used to reduce the amount of acid the stomach makes. Omeprazole is widely used treatment for indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also taken to prevent and treat stomach ulcers. Sometimes, Omeprazole is taken for a tumor in the pancreas or gut called Zollinger Ellison syndrome.
Although, non prescription Omeprazole shouldn't be taken for longer than 14 days or don't treat yourself with omeprazole more often than once every 4 months without taking to your doctor. Some proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole may cause ringing in the hairs or tinnitus. But the good news is that tinnitus resulting from taking such drugs like Omeprazole is often temporary and goes away in a few days to a few weeks after you stop taking the drug.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
