Is Severe Pain Normal After Recovery From Metatarsal Fracture?

My son recently started some soccer fitness training after being in a boot for a month: non displaced 2nd metatarsal fracture, no ligament damage, allegedly. He was responding well so 2 weeks after boot removal he played competitively and didn t last 30 minutes of start and stops. Is this normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Noted the history about your son getting nondisplaced fracture of 2nd metatarsal, responded well to boot for one month, played soccer after 2 weeks of removal of boot and developed pain within 30 minutes of playing; wants to know whether this is normal.
Surely, this is not normal. Pain should not have occurred as there is already a gap of one and half month after the fracture with proper management.
This seems possible that the healing was not complete and developed fracture or edema after playing soccer.
I would advise him the following in such a situation:
Take him to the ER or Orthopedic Surgeon for clinical examination.
X-ray of the affected area.
And further management as per the cause found.
Rest is important again.
Give him anti-inflammatory medicines for a week.
Foot bath in a small tub with hypertonic salt solution helps a lot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
