Is Severe Weight Loss Due To IBS?

My husband was diagnosed with IBS but continues to lose weight and is constantly in the bathroom, everything he eats goes right through him, I am becoming very concerned. He is 63 years old and had been under an extreme amount of stress the last 3 years. Can IBS cause extreme weight loss?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

IBS can cause weight loss if the patient eats food that he can't tolerate. However weight can be maintained by taking healthy food.

He can take fruits like carrots, cucumbers, green beans, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, lettuce, cane sugar, maple juice. Lean proteins like chicken, eggs, fish, turkey. Bananas , grapes, oranges.

Avoid high fat food, alcoholic & caffeinated beverages, whole milk, fried food, beans, cabbages, lactose & galactans, garlic & onions, etc.

He should get clinically assessed by a GP & treated for IBS. He may need medications like Rafaximin(Xifanxan), Alosetron(Lotronex), probiotics, peppermint, stress reduction & eating food at proper time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
