Is Speech Impairment In Children One Of The Symptoms Of Duane S Syndrome?

I was just told by a friend that speech impairment is sometimes a sequela of Duane s Syndrome which my son was recently diagnosed with. My 18 month old doesn t yet talk at all and I am concerned. Who do I go see about this? My pediatrician? An optometrist ( I hope not b/c she obviously didn t tell me any of this)? Speech Pathologist?

Duane's syndrome can be associated with ear abnormalities and other conditions. One of these is Goldenhar's syndrome. People affected with Goldenhar's are at an increased risk for speech impairment. Your son's hearing should be tested and a speech pathologist ought to see him for an evaluation. Although I feel that your child will need his hearing and speech evaluated, I don't want to refer you piecemeal to other specialists. Patient needing care from different providers need a doctor who can coordinate and help to make referrals to a team of health care providers. You should think about his primary care physician to be the team leader.
