Is Steroid The Only Form Of Treatment For Radiation Pneumonitis?
Hi Dr. Rynne, My 93-year-old mother has been diagnosed with radiation pneumonitis. She had radiation therapy for lung cancer back in December, 2014. Is steroid the only form of treatment for RP? She suffered a broken shoulder two weeks ago so I thought it would be best to avoid Prednisone. Thank you. Regards, Amy Email: YYYY@YYYY
Treatment for radiation pneumonitis depends on how severe the condition is. For most people, symptoms clear up on their own within 7 to 10 days of appearing. However, more severe cases require aggressive treatment. Long term use of steroids, decongestants, cough suppressants, bronchodilators and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the treatment modalities.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
