Is Struggling For Passing Stools On Daily Basis Normal In A Child?

My granddaughter who is 19 months old will suddenly get this feeling of wanting to pass motion. As she stands up she tries but it is a struggle. She then bends over and continues with the struggle. Her face shows she is struggling. After some 5 minutes later the job is complete. Why this struggle? Seems to be a daily affair.

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that your grand daughter might be having constipation.
Though symptomatic relief can be obtained with intake of laxative preparations, the underlying cause needs to be treated.

The causes of constipation can be:
1. Any pathology/ sub acute obstruction in the Gastrointestinal tract.
2. Functional cause- due to decreased gastric motility.
3. Inadequate intake of fluids and fiber rich diet.
4. Hormonal & Metabolic causes, etc.

So, kindly consult a Gastroenterologist & get a proper clinical examination done.
Investigations like complete blood count, Ultrasound scan of abdomen & contrast studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for her symptoms.

There is no need to worry, she will be fine.
Till then, maintain adequate hydration & proper nutrition status.

Wishing her a good health.
Take care.
