Is Sudden Weight Gain Due To High Cortisol Levels Causing Cushing S Syndrome?
Hi, I am a 17 year old. I was put on Prozac when I was around 9. I was of average weight before taking Prozac, but after taking it for several months I gained around 40 pounds. I saw something called Cushing s syndrome on the Internet. I was wondering if my sudden weight gain may have been a result from the high cortisol levels that Prozac produces? I was also wondering if my side effects, or if I had, Cushing s syndrome would go away? And if there would be any treatment for my potentially high cortisol levels? Thank you for your help and feedback.
Hello. Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic. High cortisol levels in the body cause Cushing syndrome. Cushing syndrome is associated with weight gain. However most of the anti depressant med are known to cause weight gain. Kindly consult your physician in case he might want to switch to another drug. Pro and cons of treatment are to be decided by him. Weight gain might be a smaller issue as compared to depression. In addition you could get your thyroid hormone levels checked for ruling out an underactive thyroid. Thanks. Kindly let me know if there's another query.
