Is Surgery Advisable When Diagnosed With Ulcerative Colitis?

Hi, I was just wondering at what point is surgery performed for ulcerative colitis. I have been bleeding for over a year, have finally been able to see a Dr. who did the colonoscopy and diagnosed me I am losing weight, am not able to eat or drink and have lost 60 lbs now in the last 5 months. I have been on Remicade for the last two months. I am on the toilet up to 6 times per hour, round the clock. I can barely walk and have been to the emergency unit several times. The last two times they admitted me to hydrate me. I can t take this any more. I have done noting but staying in bed for the past two months. I have family and friends who do everything for me - including driving me to appointments. Thank you Britt Jansen

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi dear and welcome to HCM.
I am Dr Taimoor Shahzad and I will be looking into your query.
As your history suggests you are having a very severe form of the disease in which medical treatment often do not help much. In such cases we usually go for surgery in which the diseased part of colon is removed and the remaining part is joint together. surgery often cures the disease and also reduces the chances of colon cancer.
My recommendation to you is to consult a general surgeon and go for surgery, I think it will help you much.
Meanwhile you can use antidiarrheal agents like loperamide to reduce the frequency of dirrheal episodes, and you should drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Thanks
Regards
Dr Taimoor
