Is Surgery Required For Broken Knee Cap?

I fell on ice yesterday and BROKE the patella..knee cap...I can actually see the separation on my knee...xray shows same results. I am 76 years old and already have a partial replacement in that knee. Is surgery required? Right now the leg is immobilized until I see the doctor on Thursday.
