Is Surgical Removal Of Minute Kidney Stone Advisable?
Yes, my son just had a 10mm kidneyStone blasted and it passed without any problems through a stent which was placed in the penis. Now they say he still has a 5mm stone. The doctor did not remove the stent yet. He gave him a choice to pass it on his own or have it surgically removed up the penis. what would be the best thing for him to do? He really needs to get back to work asap. But is scared to. Thank you, Barbara Jordan
Hi Barbara, I understand your concern. Kidney stone of less than 5 mm can be easily passed through urine by means of flush therapy. Since it is 5 mm, it is little risky to pass on its own without any assistance. The procedure of blasting it could be repeated and then allowed to pass it off easily. In the meantime, he should be taking vitamin C rich foods and citrus fruit juices and avoid calcium rich foods and vegetables like tomato as it is rich in uric acid, which are common compounds that precipitates formation of kidney stones. Also after removal of the stones, he needs to maintain strict diet and keep himself well hydrated all times. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
