Is Swollen, Red And Tender Leg With Small Patch On Ankle Due To Shingles?

On Thursday afternoon, I began to have a bruise like pain in my left knee and inner calf. I took a nap (to rest up for New Year s Eve evening festivities) and when I woke up, the pain/tenderness could be felt throughout my entire left leg. The leg also became very red and swollen with blotchy red spots on the inner calf part of the leg. My leg is still swollen, red and tender and today, a small patch on the lower, inner part of the leg (above my ankle, below my calf) looks pruney/slightly wrinkly and it is oozing a bit of clear fluid. Could this be shingles? (I had the chicken pox when I was a child)? If not, what other bizarre-ism could this be? (I am planning to try to see my PCM tomorrow, but I would like to be prepared for a potential diagnosis). THANKS! GN

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the pain, swelling with tender patch on ankle is most likely due to bacterial infection of skin with gram positive organism as staph aureus or else rather than shingles. As you are meeting your primary care provider tomorrow, I would like you to discuss the same in particular direction for further guidelines. Till that time, keeping leg elevated over 3 pillows when resting and avoidance of weight bearing is best supportive measure.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
