Is Swollen Upper Lip Indicative Of Hives?

My daughter had hives last night. Gave her Benadryl and by morning they were gone. Tonight her upper lip became swollen at 9pm. Gave her Benadryl again (been 45 min) and no reduction. Are these related? What could be going on? She did eat cashews the last couple of days but has had no previous issue with them. She is 9 yrs old.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain hives that have been relieved by benadryl and then swelling of the lip that can be causing Allergic Angioedema seems to be due to allergic reaction that can be due to allergic reaction to any unknown irritant and it can be due to any food or medicine while can also be due to other causes like any bug bite, skin cosmetics, chemicals in water, poison ivy, trees, grasses etc..

I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get her evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and allergic tests like patch test, prick test, RAST test, food challenge test can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

Your daughter can be advised a course of anti allergics like levocetrizine or Allegra, cool compresses over the swelling and also steroid shot of swelling is in excess..
Once the allergen is ruled out avoid exposure to it..

She can be advised to instil Immunotherapy to reduce the severity and frequency of allergic symptoms..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
