Is Taking Benadryl Safe For Itching Sensation In Body While On Promethazine?

my husband had rotator cuff and bicept tendon attachment surgery on friday he is on promethazine 25 every 6 hrs, oxycodone hcl 5mg every 3hrs and ms contin 15mg every 12 hrs he has begun to mildly itch probably due to the morphine, can he take 25mg of Benadryl?

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns....

As per your complain Promethazine is already an anti-histamine and is used to treat allergic states and as he is already taking Promethazine intake of benadryl in not exactly needed..
The other thing that I would like to tell you is that there is a mild to moderate rug interaction present between promethazine and benadryl and if both taken together can although reduce allergy symptoms but can also lead to increased side effects like dry mouth, dizziness, flushing, rapid heart rate etc..
Although not necessarily seen in all individuals but still I would suggest you to take benadryl only after consulting your treating surgeon who can either change the medication causing allergy or can increase dose of promethazine..
