Is Taking Plan B A Safe Option Despite Having Safe Sex?

I need help. I m debating on whether or not I should use my only plan b pill. Me and my boyfriend had sex, and while the condom didn t break or slip, I still feel unsafe because he came in the condom inside of me. My next period is in six days. Should I wait or take the pill?

Hi,

The purpose of condom is to prevent semen entering into female body, thus preventing its union with ovum or egg and prevent pregnancy. Even though male ejaculates inside female body while wearing condom, chances of pregnancy are very rare especially when you are sure that the condom did not slip or break. The chances of condom to protect against pregnancy are up to 97%. Condoms have added advantage of protection against other sexually transmitted diseases too.

Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill. It is used for the accidents and unplanned occasional sex when you have not used condoms or any other protection method. The earlier the pill is taken after having sexual intercourse, the better chances of prevention of pregnancy. The pill should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex as they might or might not work after that. These pills are generally 85% effective to prevent pregnancy, even though they do not protect against other sexual transmitted diseases.

In addition, emergency contraceptive pills are for emergencies only. You can not make them your routine to take it after every intercourse only to FEEL secured against pregnancy. On one side, no method of contraception is 100% guaranteed to give you protection from pregnancy and on the other hand, condoms give pretty higher chances of protection already.

So I would advise you not to take emergency contraceptive pill and wait for the periods. You are quite safe when you use condoms correctly. I hope this will ease your mind.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. Stay relieved.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
