Hello,
Hypertriglyceridemia or excess triglycerides in body is treated first by lifestyle modification like cessation of
smoking and alcohol, daily physical exercise for 45 min/day at least 5 days a week, avoidance of fatty foods, having foods rich in fiber like fruits, nuts, oats etc., cutting down the carbohydrates and weight reduction which helps a lot in decrease in triglycerides.
Pharmacological therapy or medicines are indicated when the
LDL cholesterol levels are as follows:
* Patients with low risk, 190 mg/dL or greater
* Patients with moderate risk, 160 mg/dL or greater
* Patients with moderately high risk, 130 mg/dL (option 100 mg/dL) or greater
* Patients with high risk, 100 mg/dL (option 70 mg/dL) or greater
Because of the possibility of adverse effects, many physicians use drugs to reduce the triglyceride level only when the level exceeds 500 mg/dL. Patients with triglyceride concentrations greater than 1000 mg/dL should receive diet and drug therapy and be closely monitored to prevent
pancreatitis.
Drugs used to treat hypertriglyceridemia are Fibric acid derivatives, Omega 3 fatty acids, Niacin and statins in high doses. So, you can use
Rosuvastatin 40 mg and it can help in reducing triglycerides up to 50%. You can also use Niacin and Omega 3 fatty acids if your uncle can't tolerate
fenofibrate.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
