Is Taking Seroquel Safe While Suffering From Downs Syndrome?

I have a sister with Downs Syndrome who is 56 yrs. old. She was hospitalized last summer with severe infection MRSA in her blood stream. She was mostly in the ICU from the middle of July to the first week in October. She has gone to a long term care facility after discharge. Seroquel was ordered by the MD in the hospital and they still have her on it at this facility. She has been though a lot and has not regained the function she lost being hospitalized as long as she was. She has had periods where she is non compliant and fighting with her caregivers. I do not know if this is and appropriate medication for a special needs person? Also her days and nights are turned around where she is up at night and sleeps during the day. She was on 25mg they lowered it to 12.5 mg. then brought it back to 25mg. I do not now if this is the best medication for a special needs individual. She is very tired during the day sometimes to the point of not being able to wake her up. I do not know if it is her not sleeping at night or the medication or both.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Seroquel.causes sedation and sleepiness. Seroquel is used to control or prevent psychosis/agitation and it can be used in individuals with special needs too. If she seems too tired, then decrease the dose to 12.5mg.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
