Is Taking Sucralfate Safe For The Treatment Of Acid Reflux?
My doctor ordered Sucralfate powder. CVS drug store is having a hard time getting this drug for me. Is this a new or old medicine? Husband (94 years old) has acid reflex with history of ulcers. Insurance will not cover cost. Is this safe drug for him or should we use something else. Also taking Ranitidine 150 mg twice a day. In the past took Ranitidine 300 mg once a day. What is best???
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Sucralfate is a medication primarily taken to treat active duodenal ulcers. However, it is also used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and stress ulcers. Hence, what your doctor has prescribed is right and kindly take the medication as prescribed. Ranitidine is also a medication which decreases stomach acid production, and is commonly used in treatment of peptic ulcer disease as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease. You can consult with your doctor about its intake along with Sucralfate.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
