Is Taking Antibiotic Responsible For Elevated Level Of Liver Enzyme?

Hi, i finished up several cycles of antibiotics a few weeks ago and about a week and a half after being finished i had blood work done and alt liver enzymes were elevated. My doctor said to come back in three months to more blood work. Can antibiotics cause a elevation in alt levels? They were elevated to 62. Thanks

Hi,

Yes, some antibiotics do cause liver injury as one of their common side effects resulting in elevated liver enzymes. Since you did not mention the names of the prescribed antibiotics it is difficult to ascertain their expected side effects.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
