Is Taking Calcium Supplements Harmful To Body?

My cardiologist tells me not to take calcium supplements, but I am having trouble getting enough calcium in my foods. I drink almond or buttermilk daily, eat plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and spinach regularly, but am still low. My doctor just increased my D to 6000 a day. My bones, after 2 years on Forteo, are still at risk. Should I use supplements? If so, what kind would be the least risk to my heart?

Hello,

There is no harm in calcium taken as supplement if you have low calcium.

But let me also add that calcium in excess may have negative effect on your heart health causing irregularities in heart rhythm and increased risk of aortic valve stenosis.

So it's good that you are taking calcium and vitamin D supplements but you also need to check calcium levels at regular intervals.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
