Good Morning,
How exciting to be a new mom! All new mothers are anxious to get their shape back and you will be happy to know that
breastfeeding helps to shrink your stomach after delivery unlike moms who chose not to breastfeed! Good choice for the baby and your figure.
It is not advisable to diet while breastfeeding. You will also be happy to know that the baby will be taking energy from you as the nursing progresses which will help you lose weight naturally. Your job is to ensure that you get enough calories and nutrients to grow a healthy, smart baby.
Rather than focus on restricting calories to lose weight, focus on increasing activity and integrating an exercise program into your lifestyle. That way, when you do stop nursing your exercise habits will be well-situated into your life and you can add a healthy low calorie meal plan to add to the weight reducing/body shaping effects of exercise.
Please continue to take your
prenatal vitamins while breastfeeding unless told otherwise by your doctor.
Good luck to you and baby,
Kathy J. Shattler, BSc, MS,RDN
