Is The Reason For High Iron In Blood Necessary To Treat It?

My husband has high blood iron and instead of dealing with it they want a blood test to see if it s caused by heredity. Would treatment be any different? He is sooooo exhausted we can t get in to have yet another blood draw. He has horrible neuropathy besides cirrhosis, high ammonia, blood sugar issues, and now he s developing red rings on his lower legs. What should we do? He doesn t drink and he quit his norco because of the Tylenol.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear Greetings
Regarding your husband diagnosed high content of iron in the blood with associated cirrhosis hyperammonemia bronze diabetes neuropathy I am suggesting that you have a condition called hemochromatosis
I view of this please see a gastroenterologist specialist for further expect clinical assessment and please do the following test

Liver function test
Serum urea
Abdominal ultrasound
Serum ferritin
Fasting blood sugar
Serum thiamine

Meanwhile Restrict intake of iron containing diet as you will need an iron depletion therapy
I hope this helps
