Is There A Chance Of Fetus Having Arthrogryposis?

My 31 year old brother has Arthrogryposis (from birth of course). I am not sure what type he has but he is mentally sound and is fine from the waist up but has always been unable to walk. He has had arthritis since he was a child and scoliosis. As he has gotten older he has been losing strength in his arms and has been having seizures. I am a 30 year old woman pregnant with my third child, as I already have two healthy sons. Growing up seeing my brother and his condition I am always apprehensive during my pregnancies. What are the chances of my third child having this birth defect? Should I be concerned or is there cause to relax?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Arthrogryposis is a genetic disease that can run in families, but not always. There are different types of the disease and knowing exactly what type your brother has can help figure out if you could be affected by the disease or pass it on.

From the medical research I reviewed to help answer your question, there is limited knowledge of what causes all cases of arthrogryposis (AMC)

The best way to have your question accurately answered is to see a specialist who can discuss the specifics of the disease. I think the best source of information is actually your brother's doctor. He/she may be able to let you know if your brother has an inherited type of the disease. Or a genetic counselor may also be a good resource.

However, AMC is a rare disease, and i want to reassure you that it is extremely unlikely that you could have an affected child. But you really will need to consult with specialists on AMC to properly advise you based on the type of the disease your brother actually has.

I hope I was able to answer your question and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes for your health, and your brother's as well... Dr. Brown
