Is There A Link Between High Blood Pressure And Heavy Alcohol Consumption?
Is there a link between high blood pressure and heavy alcohol consumption? What is the mechanism going on? I am particularly concerned about the bottom number... but both are up. What is happening?
Alcohol is a cardiac stimulant. It causes peripheral vasodilatation decreasing the blood supply to heart. Peripheral vasodilatation increases cardiac work load thus causing a shooting up of blood pressure. This is even more prominent in hypertensives. It is best to avoid having alcohol with a history of cardiac problem.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
Alcohol & blood pressure both are harmful to health ,So both should be avoided .Alcohol increases the blood pressure through many mechanism one of them is vasodilatation
Hope I have answered your question well to your satisfaction. Wish you speedy complete recovery at the earliest.
Hello.Welcome.With heavy alcohol consumption initially blood pressure rises and in later stages as the heart muscle gets damaged, resulting in cardiac myopathy, progressive heart failure occurs. So for longevity and good health alcohol should be taken in moderation and BINGE drinking should be avoided.Good luck.
