Is There Any Risk To The Fetus From A Dexa Bone Scan?

Hi Doctor. I am 33 years old. I had a Dexa bone scan on 11 May 2011. I did not know it at the time but I was a few days pregnant at the time. My Last Menstrual Period Date was 24 April 2011. I am very concerned about the effect of the radiation on my pregnancy. Is there any risk to the foetus from the scan?

I have understood your concern and feel it is very much valid.

Dexa Bone Scan is a X-ray exposure. During pregnancy, X-ray exposure should be avoided. Though, the increase in the risk to mother and baby is not very high in it, radiation exposure cannot be ignored. Hence, it is advised to a pregnant women only if the advantage overweighs the risk.

Though the consciousness of opinion is not towards termination of pregnancy after Dexa Bone Scan, follow up by ultrasonography and if indicated, other prenatal diagnostics tests is advisable for keeping a watch on any ill effect on the baby.

Be in contact with your Obstetrician for this issue.
