Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 14 yrs old and suffer from eczema. My doctor prescribed me a steroid cream and it clears up my eczema amazingly. I always tried to use it once a month and at the time of my period. Last month I started using it before my period and I was late, and now this month I am trying really hard not to use my steroid cream and My period is late. Could this be a side effect of not using the steroid cream? Or a side effect of using an emollient cream because I have started using an emollient cream ? I am very worried because I started my period very late (at 13) and I dont wanna have messed my body up so soon
Thank you for the query. Steroid creams are topical corticosteroid preparations, which are devoid (or may mildly produce), the systemic side effects of steroids. Some side effects of local steroids are, burning/stinging of the skin, skin colour changes, thinning (atrophy) of the skin and flaring/worsening of any old infection of skin. The systemic effects are Hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar), osteoporosis, weight gain and high blood pressure (though these are unlikely with steroid creams). Systemic steroids are more likely to cause menstrual cycle disturbances. In this context I would also like to know the preparation of local steroid cream that you are applying. Delayed menstrual cycle after application of local steroid cream for eczema is not very likely. I would want to know your height and weight (BMI) and if you continue to have delayed, irregular menstrual cycle, you must consult your gynaecologist, to rule out other conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Disease. Hope this helps you out.
