Yes - my 73 year old brother is on risperidone 1mg. 3X a day. He was started on this medication after having an espisode of talking to family and friends that had passed on - he was talking to them and they were telling him things to do. Since he has been on this medication he has gained 25lbs and has become sleepy, tired, and like a zombie. He was always talking and was going to the gym everyday but now he just sits like he is just out of it. Can he be on too much of the medication? my email address is YYYY@YYYY
Its most common side effects include excessive drowsiness or sleepiness, dry mouth, increased appetite and weight gain, and low white blood cells resulting in increased risk of infections.
Based on the history provided your brother seemed to be suffering from schizophrenia (psychosis) for which Risperidone was prescribed by his doctor and he seems to have developed some of its side effects.
Consult his treating doctor for an alternate effective but a safe drug to treat his condition or to reduce the dose of Risperidone.
Hope this will help him.
