Is There Any Surgery To Correct The Legs Affected By Polio?
I am 54 years old.. I m never comfortable WEARING SHORT DRESS OR SHORTS. I had POLIO when i was a baby. As i was growing up I was teased and made me feel like I couldn t show my legs because they re not even or the same size on the thigh part. Is there some kind of surgery that can be done for my polio? My right leg that has polio is also short compare to my left leg. So, whenever I got a new shoes I have to spend between 35-50 dollars to have a lift on my new right shoe. I ll greatly appreciated any help. sonia dietz
Hi, I went through your concern. I am happy to tell you that there are solutions to correct your affected limb cosmetically. The height discrepancy can be sorted out by an orthopedician. BY a surgical technique called Illizarov's technique your leg length can be increased such that it matches the opposite side. Similarly, a plastic surgeon can increase the size of your legs to match with the opposite side. However, if polio has left behind some functional disbaility, that may be difficult to treat. I would suggest you to meet an Ortho doctor first Regards
