Is There Chances That X-ray May Not Show Fracture?

I injured my collarbone in a slow-speed bicycle crash. Would have been painless but I hit a curb, directly on the collarbone 9roughly 3 inches from the shoulder socket. I had an xray 12 hours later (negative) It hurts very badly. Is there any truth that xrays sometimes do not show fractures until after a period of time?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

The latest X ray machines involve digital imaging and any doubtful area may be magnified on screen and confirmed by changing image contrast. It is less likely that a fracture has been missed. I agree the area may hurt badly for some time. There are very few fractures which are not seen initially and may be visible after a period of time and that involves fracture of scaphoid bone in the wrist.
