Is This Dosage Of Budecort Advisable For Recurrent Cold And Cough In An Infant?

My son is 4.5 yrs old . He was premature born in 7.5 months with 1.8 kg birth weight. My family has history of allergies. He has been having cold n cough since the 1st year it is generally more in winters nov-april n may occur once in change of weather during rains. It generally goes like beginning of cold n nose block followed by a non-stop cough for a day n then cough n cold continues for may be 10-15 days n sometimes congestion too. He also vomits in sleep due to coughing. Coughing is more during sleep. Generally for past 3 years he has been taking Montair 4, cetrizine / attrax , nebulisation by budecort 0.5 mg n levolin n if there is a congestion then augmentin dds. This winter i took him to a diff pediatric doc 2 n he prescribed Budecort 1mg intially twice daily followed by budecort0.5 mg twice daily n it continued from Feb - April n also asthalin for some time n no montair ... but i didnt see much improvement in him ...he had more or less constant cold n cough n he had ear infection twice for which he took augmentin dds. Now he is comparatively alright with a mild congestion n was advised to give him budecort 200 inhaler 2 sprays twice daily along with montair Lc kids for 3 months. Will such a high dose ok for him for such a long time as advised by this new doc? Or should i follow his old doc1 advise n just give him montair 4 n mucolite syrup? Thanks

Hello,

* There are different schools of thoughts for the management of pediatric bronchial asthma and allergic bronchitis disorders.

As a general rule of thumb, Budecort is advisable on as and when required basis when there is severe bronchi spasm, no relief with conventional syrup or tablet formulations.

It is not routine to give steroid pumps for a period of 3 months if the symptoms are well controlled after initial use of 3-5 working days. Rather than, try to boost his immunity with

- balanced nutritious diet
- deep breathing exercises, YOGA
- meditations
- avoidance of exposure to cold, pollen
- use of face mask wisely during public appearance

Later on , there are all chances of steroid dependendance in this issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
