Is Thyroid Test Recommended Inspite Of Suffering From Amenorrhea?

Hello,my period has been missing for 2 months now, I ve taken 3 pregnancy tests in the last few weeks, all negative.I suffer from Hashimoto s disease and I ve been in treatment for 10 years (I m 22 now).I recently quit taking birth control but I had 3 somewhat regular periods before the amenorrhea started. Is it normal? Should I get my thyroid levels checked just to be sure? I m a bit worried.Thank you, M

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Short answer: Yes, you may check your thyroid function.

Detailed answer:
Thank you for asking on HealthcareMagic.com, providing better healthcare for you. I have gone through your case and I can understand your concern. In this moment, we can't say that is amenorrhea, because it is defined as no menstrual period for 6 months in a woman who usually has normal periods, or for a length of time equal to three cycle intervals in a woman with less frequent cycles. Based on your history for Hashimoto disease a thyroid function check may be necessary. Going on or off birth control pills can affect menstruation. Some women have irregular or missed periods for up to six months after discontinuing birth control pills.
