Is Total Knee Replacement Recommended For This Condition?

I am booked to have a full left knee replacement in December. I was kicked 4 years ago in the knee and resulted in a tear - now I have bone on bone. I cannot walk without anti-inflammatory tablets. What a big decision to make though painkillers verses knee replacement. Your thoughts

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM
I have gone through your query. I am a resident orthopedic surgeon going through knee and hip replacement surgeries. The need for total replacement depends upon the extent of cartilage damage you had and/or joint space narrowing. If joint space is severely narrowed and compromising your motion and other conservative therapies are not helping then you can go for joint replacement surgery. It can last for 25 years and you may need a revision after this. Taking pain killers for long time is good. If the dose and need for pain killers is increasing then it will be a problem for your gut, kidney and heart. If you send your x ray of knee joint it will be more helpful in giving you suggestions.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
