Is Tramadol Recommended For Recovering Drug Addict And Alcoholic Patient?

My husband and father are both prescribed Tramadol, my father is of my most concern, he is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. The article I am reading says this is a "narcotic-like drug" what does that mean, is it safe to take and is it habit forming?

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever.weak opioid medication

Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain.

The extended-release form of tramadol is for around-the-clock treatment of pain. This form of tramadol is not for use on an as-needed basis for pain.
Try to avoid tramadol if recently within few hrs you have taken alcohol, sedatives and never use it for than prescribed duration and dosage
Yes you will be addicted if you are taking it for a longer duration but short duration okay and there are sideeffects like respiratory depression etc
