Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a ruptured sigmoid colon 8 months ago and had emergency surgery with a colostomy. I then had a take down of the colostomy. The surgeon cut around my navel both times and now my belly button protrudes. Is this an umbilical hernia and if yes is it dangerous? Do I need to have surgery to repair it or is ok to just leave as is?
Hello, Thanks for the concern. According to history you have gone through two surgical procedures and both the times incision were made around umbilicus. Now you find that your umbilicus protrudes. This suggests it might be umbilicus hernia and the only treatment of Umbilical hernia is surgical repair. Umbilical hernia can be dangerous when the abdominal content get strangulated. So consult the surgeon as early as possible , get investigated and start treatment. Take care
