Is Using FML Eye Drops For A Month For Ocular Rosacea Safe ?
Hello, I have ocular rosacea. My doctor has prescribed the use of FML eye drops (fluorometholone) 4 times a day for a month then 3 times a day for another month before going back to him. Now reading about this medication, everywhere it is said that it can be very dangerous to use it more than a week and it may lead to thinning of the cornea (front part of the eyeball), glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, development of eye infections, or the formation of cataracts. One should have regular eye check-ups to monitor for these types of side effects if one uses this medicine for longer than a week. But my doctor never advised that. What do you suggest?
Hello FML is a steroid eye drop containing flurometholone and is used for treatment of allergic and non infective inflammatory conditions. Ocular rosacea is a allergic condition, hence use of steroid eye drops is justified. But steroid eye drops are known to cause cataract and glaucoma when used for long term. Hence I advice you to undergo examination at regular intervals to prevent these complications. If you are having any of these complications you need to use other alternative drugs and avoid steroids.
Thank you
