Is Using A Knee Brace Advisable To Treat Sharp Pain And Swelling In The Knees?

I have sharp pain in my left knee and thigh and swelling on both sides and below the knee which occurred after a partial fall (did not hit the floor but fell toward the wall) that occurred over two months ago. I recently had an X-ray and MRI which I m told were normal. Current pain medications do not help. I take warfarin so ibuprofen is not an option and was prescribed prednisone several times over the last couple of months with no relief. Would a knee brace help with the pain for walking/exercising and if yes, what type of brace would be appropriate? I ve been in physical therapy for two months due to two herniated discs and sciatica, but the PT only exacerbates the problem. Thank you.

Hello,

Yes, wearing a knee brace will help to minimize the strain on your joint. You are having the pain because of he inflammation & welling. You should see an orthopedic to detect the type of injury causing you discomfort.

Since you had a partial fall & X-Ray shows no fracture, the pain & swelling can occur due to meniscus tear or ACL, anterior cruciate ligament injury. However, get physically examined to get confirmed.

Braces that work well for meniscus tear are hinged knee support brace while bionic knee brace/bionic full stop ACL brace. Wear braces after consultation with your treating doctor & physiotherapist.

It would be better to stay at rest & let the swelling subside first. Avoid heavy exercises at present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
