Is Uttering Only Handful Of Words At The Age Of 2 And Half A Sign Of Autism?
a doctor here in Liberal, ks. has referred us to a Dr. in Wichita, Ks. the reason is that my grandson, now two and a half years old only says a handful of words , and not consistently. Does this sound like autism ? He knows and understands every thing we say to him. I have even set boundaries outside (a fence line, a crack in the sidewalk) that he cant go past and he knows this and stays within those boundaries.
The usual vocabulary of a child at 2 and half year is around 200 words in his dictionary with full ability to make complete sentence of 3-4 words. Although lack of this may be part of Autism, the rest of the clinical conditions such as specific learning disorder or others must be ruled first. A detailed evaluation with an expert neurologist of a child speciality is very vital in this matter to proceed for the final diagnosis and tackle his upcoming care accordingly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
