Is Varying Hemoglobin Levels During Recovery After Treating Lesions Near Stomach Normal?

My brother has been bleeding in his stomach...cauterizing was done two times...unsuccessful. Then a surgery was done where they opened him up...they located a small ulcer that was removed. He was then closed up. He continued to lose blood hemoglobin levels dropping to 4.7. (Throughout the week that it took for them to perform the cauterizing and then surgery he had undergone many transfusions.) Again more blood given to him that would get him to 8.7...9.0 range. Then would drop again. The surgeon went back in with the assistance of another surgeon to look for additional bleeding and found a lesion at the very top of where the esophagus meets the stomach along with a large clot (About 4 pints worth). They removed the clot and sewed up the lesion. (This was two days ago) Yesterday his levels were at 10.2, then 9.1 then 7.9...Doctor said his levels will continue to vary as his body goes through the process of recovery...they gave him an additional 2 pints yesterday....Today his hemoglobin was 8.7...again more blood given today. (Up to 9.5)...it now is 9.4. Is this a normal course of action? Is there concern with this varying hemoglobin level? Should we be concerned with additional internal bleeding, despite the surgeon feeling like he got to the root of the issue?

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM). I appreciate your concern regarding your brother. Suggest that he is either bleeding from the lesion which dosctor has sewed or from other lession. So I will suggest him to visit a Gastroenterologist who may advise for endoscopy, colonoscopy and may be a capsule endoscopy.
I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
I find this answer helpful
