Is Vitiligo Hereditary? Can It Passed On To Male Or Female Children?
Hello
I want get clear for vitiligo skin disease.
Actually am going get married, so the girl to which I will be marrying her dad has vitiligo disease.
as by reading I came to know that some percent it hereditary.but the girl doesn't have any symptoms right now,so is there any chances of getting here the same disease or any chances to get children in future.
Are there any test where we confirm that it will not or will carry to girl or to her children.
I need to take a decision as my parents are not willing me to get marry with her.
Please suggest me the correct answer to my question so that i can take correct decision for my future life

this is one of the common social issue as vitiligo is taken as social stigma.
There is definitely some role of heredity in almost every disease and it is said everything is genetic. but in case of vitiligo the role of heredity it is not known precisely. meaning we cant predict who will get vitiligo and if parents have weather child will get or not. also there is no such test which can give you guarantee for the same.
she may get in future or may not get vitiligo and even if she doesnt get or even no one in your family had vitiligo still your child can get it. its totally unpredictable as vitiligo is a autoimmune disease.

Vitiligo has a hereditary component. Approximately 10 percent of vitiligo patients have a family history of vitiligo. Usually by 20 years of age 50 percent of patients will start manifesting signs of vitiligo.
There are no tests available so far to predict whether a person will have vitiligo or not.
This is a simple skin disease with change in color of skin, It is not contagious. It can be treated if detected early.
Personally if you like the girl and if you feel that you both are compatible father having vitiligo should not affect the decision to marry her. This is my personal opinion. Even you have a 2 percent chance of having vitiligo in the future. Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart diseases etc all have hereditary component. No body bothers about these before marriage. I wonder why ?
