Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been prescribed Baclofen for long term (4 years) pain from gluteous medius injury. ( 10 MG once before bed) I do daily exercies set up by a physical therapist. Since doing the exercises, the pain has gotten much less over time. I stopped the Baclofen for about two weeks and the pain returned so that it was noticeable. I have been taking the tablets again for about two weeks. I see that this can become addictive and also that it raises blood sugar levels. I am pre-diabetic. Should I stop this medication?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You are very right, Baclofen once used for long time should not be stopped abruptly as serious withdrawal effects can bounce back. The recommendation is that it should be stopped by decreasing the dose in at least two weeks, the withdrawal time should be further prolonged if symptoms reoccur on withdrawing. Yes, you are right. The drug is diabetogenic and personally I would advise you to stop it, as it would be better. However, don't stop it abruptly and it all should happen with proper consultation of your treating physician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
