Is Work Environment Consisting Of Molds The Cause For Recurring Allergies?

I have chronic sinus issues and have had surgery 3 times. I am mildly allergic to some molds. Recently, they told me a culture came back that was positive for pseudomonas. I am otherwise healthy and all my bloodwork has come back normal. I have looked it up online and it scares me. I am on Levaquin for 10 days and I was just on it a month ago for bronchitis/sinus issues. My question - could my work environment, which has tested positive for mold in the past and which often has leaky ceilings, be the cause of my infections? The children also eat breakfast in here daily and spill milk/food/juice on the carpet. Thank you.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As you are positive for having allergies to molds, working in the environment that is positive for molds can make surely make you chronically exposed to the allergen causing frequent sinus and allergy problems. Leaky ceiling is also another factor of concern in your case.

I would advise you to change or modify the working environment that is mold free as first step in management of chronic allergies is to eliminate the exposure to allergen. In addition, you should start taking antihistamine such as Levocetrizine 5 mg (Levocet) or Loratidine 10 mg (Lorfast) once a day for a few days. You can also go for a blood test for allergy testing that can confirm your allergies to molds.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
